New Laplock App Alerts You When Someone Unplugs Your MacBook
Worried about someone stealing your laptop? Get a funny feeling in your stomach every time you leave your roommate alone with your computer? If so, a new app from the TechCrunch Hackathon in London may be just what you're looking for. The app, known as Laplock, will let you know whenever someone unplugs your MacBook.
How Laplock Works
If someone unplugs your computer, a loud alarm will sound through your speakers and you will get a text message or Yo sent to your phone. If there is not sufficient reception for texts or Yos at that time, the app will call you with an alert instead.Laplock is essentially a menubar app for an Apple computer. After you install it on your computer, you enter your phone number or your Yo account information so the app has a way to reach out to you. When you close your laptop lid, the app will register that the computer is supposed to be left alone.
The Benefits of Laplock
The technology behind Laplock is pretty simple, but the stress relief that comes with it is huge. Even the cheapest of MacBooks can be incredibly expensive, so it's natural to be apprehensive about leaving your laptop in someone else's care. With an app like this, you'll have peace of mind because you will know when someone unplugs your computer.
Another benefit is the fact that the alarms go off on your computer, much like a car alarm on your vehicle. If you leave your MacBook alone in a library, coffee shop, restaurant, etc., the whole world will know when someone tries to take it.
The Downsides to Laplock
Despite the positive features of Laplock, there are a couple of concerns to keep in mind. If you forget that you have the app activated, you might set off an alarm when you go to move your laptop to another room. If you leave your phone in your car or house, the alerts aren't going to do you any good.
The app also doesn't do you any good if you use a Windows-based laptop instead of a MacBook. Seeing that there are 20 times more PCs than Macs sold in the world, the app doesn't have nearly the reach that it would on a Windows computer. Of course, this is an app that was created in just a couple of days on a whim, but there is still room for improvement.
