How to Apply for College Online

Thanks to online applications, applying to college is easier than ever.  In order to apply online, first visit the college or university’s website. Many schools allow you to submit your application online, but not all, so there is a chance that you’ll be required to apply by mail. Start by going to the admissions page and reading about the application process. You’ll want to follow the guidelines closely. It’s smart to print out the application guidelines so that you can refer to them as you move through the process.

In addition to printing out the steps and guidelines, it’s also wise to print out a copy of the application itself. Fill out the application with pen before filling it out online. You’ll want to know the answers to the questions before you start the online application so that you can move through it quickly and prevent errors.

Some colleges and universities require an essay or personal statement along with the application. You’ll include this in the online application, but you should first write and edit a few drafts on paper or on a Word document on the computer. Don’t enter the essay or personal statement into the online application until you’ve finished editing it. Once you’re ready, you should be able to copy and paste the essay into the application.

Since you’ll be filling out the application online, make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. Otherwise, you could lose the application part of the way through filling it out. Also, you may need software that can read and edit PDF documents such as Adobe. Make sure to set aside enough time to fill out the application thoroughly in one sitting. If you don’t fill it out completely, it’s possible that a partial application will be sent along to the school.

The online application is only part of what you’ll need to submit to the college or university of your choice. There are aspects of your application portfolio, such as old transcription requests, that require participation by your teachers and school, too. Make sure to stay organized throughout the process and to put in requests for the documents you’ll need well ahead of time.
